Council invites interested citizens to apply for general seat vacancy by May 16

Citizens interested in filling the vacant General Seat on the Joplin City Council seat should submit an application to the City Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Applications can be obtained through the Clerk’s office on the second floor of Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main Street. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Candidates for the Council General Seat should be a qualified voter of the City of Joplin and have been a Joplin resident for at least the immediate past four years.

During the May 21, 2018 City Council meeting, applicants will have an opportunity to present their interest and qualifications to the Council. After this meeting, Council members will then consider all applicants in the process of filling the seat. Council will hold a special meeting for consideration of applicants and then vote to fill the vacancy. The applicant who receives the majority of Council votes will take the office and complete the term until the next City Council election in 2020.

The special meeting date will be announced later this week.

This Council seat became vacant upon Josh Bard’s resignation from the Council. The Joplin City Council voted to accept his resignation at the April 27, 2018 Council meeting.
