The City of Joplin is currently in the process of updating its stormwater management master plan. The stormwater management master plan primarily evaluates the performance capability and deficiencies of the City’s existing major drainage system. Some of the key goals in updating the master plan are to identify infrastructure deficiencies, drainage and flooding concerns, and erosion or water quality issues within the City. With these known issues, a recommended capital improvements plan will be developed for the City to correct existing major deficiencies and will include a list of potential stormwater projects to be addressed in the future.
To help recognize stormwater issues within the community, City staff will hold a series of Public Meetings asking citizens for their input regarding drainage issues within the City, including their neighborhoods.
Three public meetings are scheduled focusing on different areas of the City, including the northeast, northwest, and southern areas of Joplin. The public is encouraged to attend any of these meetings to discuss drainage issues that may be affecting them. Map exhibits will available at the meetings so attendees can provide City staff with a visual location of their drainage issue. Citizens are welcome to share items such as pictures or videos that illustrate the drainage issue in question at the meeting. Citizens may also complete a questionnaire to describe the nature of the drainage issue experienced. This information will assist in the research phase of the study to ultimately develop a thorough stormwater master plan.
Meeting dates and their locations are:
• Thursday, September 17 at the Joplin Athletic Complex, 3301 West 1st Street
• Thursday, September 24 at the Housing Authority’s Community Center located at 5th and Turk Avenue.
• Tuesday, September 29 at the Joplin Senior Center, 2616 Picher Avenue
The meetings are being held in different areas of Joplin, however citizens are welcome to attend any of these meetings, regardless of their address. For more information about the Stormwater Master Plan, call Steven Martinez at 417-624-0820, ext. 531.
