City seeking Depot photos and mementos to help with possible renovation
July 27, 2010
With the City of Joplin’s recent announcement of SPARK, a three-phased community improvement project, several developments that would enhance the northern area of downtown Joplin were noted, including the renovation of the Union Depot. SPARK is the acronym for “Stimulate Progress through Arts, Recreation, and Knowledge of the past.”
Built in 1910, the Union Depot was the pinnacle location of rail transportation in Joplin and the surrounding community. Thousands of travelers walked through its doors to greet loved ones as they arrived, or to offer a heartfelt goodbye to friends and family leaving, including those going off to serve our country during wartime.
As this Joplin landmark holds many memories for residents, their old photo albums may be the key to a true replication of the original Depot. The City asks citizens if they would graciously offer any type of mementos and/or photographs that provide insight to the Depot’s early days of operations to help with possible renovation efforts by achieving an accurate restoration estimate. Specifically, photos showing the interior lights, walls, or decorations would be helpful. These photos will be catalogued and preserved as a historical resource.
Citizens may contact Chad Greer, the architect working on this project at 417-673-3134, to provide their items. All items should be tagged appropriately with a name, address and phone number of its owner. Items will be returned as requested by the donor.
