The City of Joplin will have a staff member present at each pool facility that is being used. They will be the person that will notify patrons/activity directors/officials when it is time to leave or take cover at a facility due to thunder and lightning. Each staff member will have a weather app (ex. WeatherBug) that will show them incoming storms and the distance of any lightning strikes.
Our policy states, if we see a lightning strike within 10 miles (in the sky or on a weather app), all activities will be suspended until 30-minutes after the last strike of lightning is outside our 10-mile radius and/or after the last sound of thunder is heard.
Remember: the 30-minute clock restarts for each lightning flash within the 10-mile radius and each time thunder is heard. Patrons, officials and fans will be asked to take shelter in a bathhouse or may leave the premises. Once the City of Joplin staff member notifies that the area is clear then activities may resume. There is absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.
